The Curriculum

English

Our aim is for children to be able to read and write, speak with confidence and fluency and listen carefully. Listening is a major way of learning and an important part of being able to get on well with others. The school follows the National Literacy Strategy Framework for teaching. We encourage the children to read widely and to support this we have a well resources library for both Key Stage One and Key Stage Two children.

During English lessons, teachers regularly listen to children read and parents are actively encouraged to do the same at home. In the early stages the children begin with a structured scheme. The books are attractive and motivating for the children. The children are then offered a wide range of learning experience, which enables them to develop as confident, fluent readers. The children read, study and evaluate many different texts, both fiction and non-fiction.

A variety of writing for different purposes is undertaken each term, including description, explanations, letter writing, reports, stories and play scripts. Phonics, spelling and punctuation are taught through a structured programme.
